In 1851 he formed the I.M Singer & Company along with a Lawyer from New York Edward C. Clark. They together created the first lockstitch sewing machine which was patented. After this creation the company the company became the leading marketer and manufacturer of sewing machines in just two years in the United States. At this point they decided to set up their corporate offices in New York City and renamed the company to Singer Manufacturing Company. The first set of manufactured machines from their new facility in New York sold for $100 USD.

Soon after that they were awarded the first prize at a world fair in Paris. In 1867 they opened a factory in Glasgow, Scotland which was the first factory to be opened outside of the United States. Over the years they opened other factories across Europe and in 1871 the Bridgton factory in Britain became the largest Singer factory in Britain. In that year alone they reached unit sales of 180,000.

Further Expansion
